Planning exactly how a dancer enters and leaves the performance space — and where they're positioned within it — is a deliberate choice that should be consistent with a dance's genre, style, mood or the ideas it's trying to convey, not just an afterthought once the choreography itself is finished. Building the confidence to maintain accurate, fluent spatial placement throughout a performance takes dedicated rehearsal, since a dancer under performance pressure can easily lose precise awareness of where they are in the space relative to markers, other performers, or the audience. For this activity, choose a short existing movement phrase (your own or one you've learned), and specifically plan and rehearse its entrance, exit and spatial pathway through the performance space — reflecting on how these choices affect the phrase's overall feeling and clarity.
Example
A slow, contemplative solo might use a long, unhurried entrance from the back corner of the space to establish mood before any movement even begins, while a high-energy ensemble piece might use dancers entering from multiple points simultaneously to immediately create a sense of energy and scale — the same choreography would feel very different with a different entrance and spatial plan.
