Reading & summarising a longer text

Find a longer text in your target language than you've tackled before — a full short story, a longer news article, or several pages of a graded reader — and read it in full, then write a short summary (3-5 sentences) in your target language covering the main points. Summarising forces genuine comprehension, not just recognition: you can't summarise something you didn't actually understand, even roughly, so this is a good honest check on how much you're really getting from a longer piece of reading.

Example

After reading a longer article about a local event in your target language, a summary might cover: what the event was, when and where it happened, who was involved, and why it mattered — condensing several paragraphs down to the essential information, which requires genuinely processing the text rather than just recognising individual words.
