Translate a short passage (4-6 sentences) from English into your target language, and separately, translate a short passage from your target language into English — noticing where a direct, word-for-word translation doesn't quite work and you need to find a more natural equivalent phrase instead. Translation is a genuinely different skill from simply reading or speaking: it requires understanding a text deeply enough in one language to accurately and naturally reconstruct its meaning in another.
Example
The English phrase "it's raining cats and dogs" translated word-for-word into another language would likely make no sense at all — a good translator instead finds that language's own equivalent expression for heavy rain, showing that translation is about accurately conveying meaning, not just swapping words one by one.
