Constructing scientific arguments

A strong scientific argument connects a claim to a range of supporting evidence, showing clearly how that evidence backs up the conclusion — rather than simply asserting a claim is true. Scientists look for similar trends and patterns across different, independent sources of evidence (like matching data from fossils, homologous body structures, and DNA analysis all pointing toward the same evolutionary relationship) since converging evidence from multiple angles strengthens a claim more than a single source alone. How a scientific text is structured — what content it includes, what language and text features it uses — is also a deliberate choice that shapes how convincingly and clearly an argument comes across to its intended audience. For this activity, choose a scientific claim (such as the age of the universe, or evidence for climate change), and write a short structured argument (200-300 words) that clearly states the claim and supports it with at least three distinct pieces of evidence, explaining how each supports the claim.

Example

A structured argument for the age of the universe might combine evidence from the cosmic microwave background radiation, the observed expansion rate of the universe, and the ages of the oldest known stars — three genuinely independent lines of evidence that converge on a similar estimate, which is a stronger argument than relying on just one of these alone.
