Developing a cohesive artistic body of work (a folio or exhibition-ready collection) means moving beyond isolated, unrelated pieces toward a series that explores a consistent theme, concept or visual approach in depth — through genuine experimentation, reflection and revision, not just producing more individual pieces. Documenting the developmental process (preliminary sketches, experiments, artist statements explaining intent) is itself considered a valuable part of an artist's practice, showing the thinking and decision-making behind a finished work, not just the polished final result. A strong artist statement clearly and specifically articulates the ideas, influences and intentions behind a body of work, giving a viewer meaningful context beyond what the works alone might communicate.
Example
Rather than creating ten unrelated pieces in ten different styles, an artist developing a cohesive body of work exploring memory might create a series of pieces all using fragmented, layered imagery — each individual piece exploring a different specific aspect of the same central theme (like a specific memory, or the feeling of forgetting), building a deeper, more considered exploration than any single unrelated piece could achieve alone.
