Extended spoken discussion: current issues

Have an extended conversation (15+ minutes) in your target language about a genuine current issue or topic you're both interested in — not a scripted exchange, but a real discussion with follow-up questions, points of agreement and disagreement, and natural back-and-forth. This tests your ability to think and respond in real time in your target language on a topic without prepared vocabulary lists, which is a meaningfully different (and harder) skill than a rehearsed conversation on a predictable, familiar topic.

Example

A discussion about whether social media does more harm than good might start with one person's opening view, followed by the other asking a genuine follow-up question ("what about the way it helps people stay connected with family overseas?"), pushing the conversation into territory neither person planned for in advance — exactly the kind of unscripted, responsive exchange that builds real conversational fluency.

Key terms

Follow-up question:: A question that responds directly to what the other person just said, developing the conversation further.
Conversational fluency:: The ability to respond and think in real time in a language, without relying on prepared scripts.
