Choose an aspect of the culture connected to your target language — a historical event, an artist or writer, a social custom, a current issue — and research it independently, using sources in your target language where you can (even if you also need to use English sources to fill gaps). Present your findings (as a short written report, a presentation, or a video) partly or fully in your target language, demonstrating both your research skills and your ability to communicate what you've learned in a language other than English.
Example
Researching a well-known author who writes in your target language might involve reading a short biography and an excerpt of their work in the original language, then presenting a summary of their significance and your own reaction to their writing — combining genuine research skills with authentic language practice, rather than treating language learning and research as two completely separate tasks.
