Academic & professional register writing

Languages · Year 12

Name: ______________________Date: ____________

Write a longer, formal piece in your target language — around 200-300 words — on a topic you'd realistically need to write about in a professional or academic setting, such as a formal email, a short report, or an argument on a serious topic. Academic and professional register differs from everyday conversational language: it typically avoids slang and contractions, uses more precise and sometimes more complex vocabulary, and follows more careful, formal sentence structure and organisation.

Example

A formal email requesting information from a company would use full, polite sentence structures and formal greetings and sign-offs appropriate to your target language's conventions, rather than the shortened, casual phrasing you might use texting a friend.

Key terms

Register:
The level of formality used in language, adjusted to suit context and audience.
Formal writing:
Writing that avoids slang and follows careful, precise sentence structure.

This topic is self-directed and doesn't have quiz questions.
