Every word in a sentence does a job. A noun names a person, place, thing or idea (dog, beach, happiness). A verb shows an action or state (run, is, think). An adjective describes a noun (a fast dog, a sunny beach). An adverb describes a verb, adjective or another adverb, often answering "how", "when" or "where" — and often ending in -ly (quickly, yesterday, there).
Example
"The tired dog slowly walked home." Dog is the noun, walked is the verb, tired describes the dog (adjective), and slowly describes how it walked (adverb).
