Types of texts

Texts are usually written for one of three main purposes. A narrative text tells a story, with characters and events (a short story, a novel). An informative text explains or gives facts about something (a news report, an instruction manual). A persuasive text tries to convince the reader of an opinion (an advertisement, an opinion piece). Knowing the purpose helps you read — and write — more effectively.

Example

A recipe is informative (it explains how to cook something). A fairy tale is a narrative (it tells a story). A poster arguing kids should get more screen time is persuasive (it's trying to convince you).
