Once you know what nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs do, the real skill is spotting them inside real sentences — where several might appear together. A useful trick: ask what job each word is doing. Is it naming something (noun)? Showing an action (verb)? Describing a noun (adjective)? Describing how, when or where something happens (adverb)? Some words can even change job depending on the sentence.
Example
"The clever fox quickly hid inside the old barn." Fox and barn are nouns, hid is the verb, clever and old are adjectives (describing fox and barn), and quickly is the adverb (describing how it hid).
