Water doesn't just cycle through the environment — where it's located and how it's managed matters enormously for people. Australia's water resources (rivers, groundwater, dams) are unevenly distributed, with much of the continent naturally dry, meaning careful management and sustainability strategies are needed to share water fairly between cities, farms and the environment. Water holds economic value (used in farming, industry and homes), and deep cultural, spiritual and aesthetic value — especially for First Nations Australians, for whom water sources are often central to Country, identity and cultural practices. Hydrological hazards, like floods and droughts, can have major impacts on communities, prompting responses from both communities and governments, such as building levees, water restrictions, or early warning systems.
