Operations with fractions & decimals

To add or subtract fractions, they need a common denominator — convert each fraction so they share the same bottom number, then add or subtract the tops. To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together. To divide by a fraction, flip it (find its reciprocal) and multiply instead. For decimals, line up the decimal points to add or subtract; for multiplication, ignore the decimal points until the end, then count the total decimal places to place it correctly in the answer.

Example

1/4 + 1/2 = 1/4 + 2/4 = 3/4 (common denominator 4). To divide 2/3 ÷ 1/2, flip the second fraction and multiply: 2/3 × 2/1 = 4/3 = 1⅓.

Common denominator:
A shared bottom number that lets fractions be added or subtracted.
Reciprocal:
A fraction flipped upside down (e.g. the reciprocal of 2/3 is 3/2).
