A growing pattern often follows a rule that connects the position (like the 1st, 2nd, 3rd shape) to the value (like the number of squares). Reading a graph the other way lets you predict values without continuing the pattern by hand.

Example

A pattern of matchstick squares uses 4 matches for 1 square, 7 for 2 squares, 10 for 3 squares — each new square adds 3 matches. The rule is "matches = 3 × squares + 1". Plotting (1,4), (2,7), (3,10) on a graph shows a straight line going up.
