Fractions basics

A fraction shows part of a whole — the bottom number (denominator) shows how many equal parts something is split into, and the top number (numerator) shows how many of those parts you have. Equivalent fractions look different but represent the same amount, like 1/2 and 2/4. To add or subtract fractions, they need the same denominator first.

Example

You eat 2 slices of a pizza cut into 8 slices — that's 2/8 of the pizza, which simplifies to 1/4. If your sibling also eats 1/4, together you've eaten 1/4 + 1/4 = 2/4 = 1/2 of the pizza.
