Percentages of an amount

Mathematics · Year 7

Name: ______________________Date: ____________

Percent means "out of 100" — 25% is 25 out of 100, or the fraction 25/100, or the decimal 0.25. To find a percentage of an amount, convert the percentage to a decimal and multiply. Percentages show up constantly in real life: discounts, interest, test scores, and tips.

Example

A $60 jacket is 20% off. 20% of $60 is 0.20 × 60 = $12. So the jacket now costs $60 − $12 = $48.

Key terms

Percent:
A way of expressing a number as "out of 100".
Discount:
