A ratio compares two or more quantities, written like 2:3. Ratios can be simplified the same way fractions can — dividing both sides by their highest common factor. To share an amount in a given ratio, add the ratio parts together to find the total number of "shares", then work out what one share is worth.
Example
You and a friend share $40 in the ratio 3:1 (you get 3 parts, they get 1 part). That's 4 parts total, so each part is $40 ÷ 4 = $10. You get 3 × $10 = $30, your friend gets 1 × $10 = $10.
