Perimeter & area

Mathematics · Year 7

Name: ______________________Date: ____________

Perimeter is the distance all the way around a shape's edge — you add up every side. Area is the amount of flat space a shape covers, measured in square units. For a rectangle, area = length × width. For a triangle, area = (base × height) ÷ 2.

Example

A rectangular garden bed is 4m long and 3m wide. Its perimeter is 4 + 3 + 4 + 3 = 14m of edging needed. Its area is 4 × 3 = 12m² of soil to cover.

Key terms

Perimeter:
The total distance around the outside of a shape.
Area:
The amount of flat space a shape covers.
