Data is raw facts and figures — numbers, words, or observations — before they've been organised into something meaningful. Information is data that has been organised and given context, so it becomes useful. Collecting data (like a class survey) and organising it into a chart or graph turns raw numbers into information that's easy to understand and use for decisions.

Example

Recording each student's favourite sport one by one is data. Organising those results into a bar graph showing how many students like each sport turns that data into information — much easier to read and compare at a glance.
