The Arts · Year 8
Artists work with different media — the physical materials used to create a piece, such as paint, clay, charcoal or digital tools — and apply different techniques to get particular effects. Blending smoothly transitions between colours or tones, layering builds up depth by applying materials in stages, and carving removes material to reveal a form, as in sculpture.
Example
A ceramic artist might carve a design into wet clay, then apply layers of glaze in different colours before firing it, blending the edges of each glaze colour so they merge smoothly rather than having a hard line between them.
