Sentences are built from clauses, and how you combine clauses determines the sentence type. A simple sentence has one independent clause — a complete thought that can stand alone. A compound sentence joins two independent clauses with a conjunction like "and", "but" or "so". A complex sentence combines an independent clause with a dependent clause (one that can't stand alone), often introduced by words like "although", "because" or "when".

Example

"The rain started." (simple) → "The rain started, so we packed up the picnic." (compound) → "Although the rain started, we finished the picnic anyway." (complex).
