Languages don't exist in isolation — many are related to each other through shared ancestry, grouped into language families. The Romance languages (Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Romanian) all descended from Latin, which is why they share many similar words and grammar patterns. The Germanic languages (English, German, Dutch, Swedish) share a different common ancestor. Some languages, like Japanese or Basque, are language isolates or belong to families with few close relatives, sharing little obvious similarity with major world languages.
