An equation is really just a puzzle: something is unknown, and you work backwards to find it. Whatever you do to one side, you must do to the other, until the unknown is by itself. This comes up constantly with money — working out a price, a cost per item, or how much change you should get.
Example
You have $50. After buying a shirt, you have $32 left. As an equation that's 50 − x = 32. Rearranging: x = 50 − 32 = $18. The shirt cost $18.
