Fractions, decimals, percentages

Fractions, decimals and percentages are three different ways of writing the same value. To turn a fraction into a percentage, divide the numerator by the denominator and multiply by 100. To turn a percentage into a decimal, divide by 100. This comes up everywhere in real life: discounts, tips, GST and splitting bills.

Example

1/4 = 0.25 = 25%, because 1 ÷ 4 = 0.25, and 0.25 × 100 = 25%. A $80 jacket with 25% off saves you $20, so you pay $60.
