Statistics

Mathematics · Year 8

Name: ______________________Date: ____________

Statistics is about making sense of data. The mean (average) is found by adding all the values and dividing by how many there are. The median is the middle value once the data is ordered smallest to largest. The mode is the value that appears most often. Each tells you something different — useful for anything from sports scores to weekly spending.

Example

Scores in 5 games: 8, 10, 6, 10, 6. Mean = (8+10+6+10+6) ÷ 5 = 8. Ordered: 6, 6, 8, 10, 10 — the median (middle value) is 8. Both 6 and 10 appear twice, so this data has two modes.

Key terms

Mean:
The average — add all the values, divide by how many there are.
Median:
The middle value once data is ordered smallest to largest.
Mode:
The value that appears most often.
Range:
The difference between the highest and lowest value.
