Mixed media & digital art

The Arts · Year 9

Name: ______________________Date: ____________

Mixed media art combines two or more different materials or techniques in a single piece — like watercolour paint with ink drawing, or a painted background with collaged paper cut-outs. Digital art applies similar creative thinking using software tools instead of (or alongside) physical materials — layers, digital brushes, and effects let artists combine and edit elements in ways that would be difficult with only physical media.

Example

A mixed media artwork might start with a painted watercolour background, add a collage of magazine cut-outs, then finish with fine-liner ink details on top — three different techniques working together in one piece.

Key terms

Mixed media:
Art combining two or more different materials or techniques.
Collage:
Art made by assembling different materials, like paper, onto a surface.
Layer:
A separate, stackable level in digital art software, allowing elements to be edited independently.

Questions

  1. 1. Mixed media art combines:

    • Two or more different materials or techniques
    • Only one material, always
    • No materials at all
    • Only digital tools, never physical ones
  2. 2. Collage is made by:

    • Assembling different materials onto a surface
    • Using only paint
    • Using only pencil
    • Using no materials at all
  3. 3. In digital art, a layer is:

    • A separate, stackable level that can be edited independently
    • A type of physical paper
    • A paintbrush
    • A frame around the artwork
  4. 4. Combining watercolour paint with ink drawing is an example of:

    • Mixed media
    • Digital art only
    • A single, pure medium
    • Photography only
  5. 5. Digital art tools include:

    • Digital brushes and layers
    • Only physical paint
    • Only scissors and glue
    • Nothing related to software
  6. 6. Magazine cut-outs used in an artwork are an example of a technique called:

    • Collage
    • Digital painting
    • Sculpture only
    • Photography only
  7. 7. Mixed media allows artists to:

    • Combine techniques in ways a single medium alone might not achieve
    • Only ever use one single technique
    • Avoid any creative choices
    • Remove all texture from an artwork
  8. 8. Why might an artist use layers in digital art rather than drawing everything on one single flat image?

    • Layers let you edit or move individual elements without affecting the rest of the artwork
    • Layers make editing impossible
    • Layers have no practical benefit
    • A single flat image is always easier to edit
  9. 9. A mixed media piece using paint, collage and ink demonstrates:

    • Combining multiple techniques in one artwork
    • Using only one technique repeated three times
    • A purely digital process
    • An artwork with no technique used at all
  10. 10. Digital art effects (like blending or filters) can help artists:

    • Achieve effects that would be difficult with physical materials alone
    • Never produce any interesting visual effect
    • Only be used for photography
    • Remove the need for any creativity
  11. 11. Why might a mixed media artist choose to add texture (like fabric or sand) to a painting?

    • To create a tactile, three-dimensional quality beyond what paint alone offers
    • Texture has no visual or tactile effect on an artwork
    • Adding texture always ruins a painting
    • Physical texture has no relevance to mixed media
  12. 12. A key advantage of digital art over some physical media is:

    • The ability to undo mistakes and experiment without wasting materials
    • Digital art can never be edited once created
    • Digital tools always look identical to physical media with no difference
    • It removes all need for creative decisions
  13. 13. Combining a photograph with painted elements over the top is an example of:

    • Mixed media
    • A purely traditional technique with no combination
    • A method with no real name or category
    • Sculpture only
  14. 14. Why might mixed media be considered a good technique for artists still developing their style?

    • It encourages experimentation across materials, which can reveal personal creative preferences
    • It restricts artists to only one possible technique forever
    • Experimentation has no value in developing an art style
    • Mixed media is only appropriate for advanced professional artists
  15. 15. Why might a digital artist choose to work with layers even when creating a piece that will eventually be flattened into a single image?

    • Layers make the editing process during creation much more flexible before finalising the piece
    • Layers only matter for the final flattened image, not the process
    • The editing process has no connection to the choice to use layers
    • Flattened images can never have started as layered files
  16. 16. Why can mixed media sometimes be considered a more expressive medium than a single traditional technique?

    • Combining materials can capture complexity and texture that one medium alone might not convey
    • Mixed media is always objectively worse than single-medium art
    • Only single-medium art can ever be considered expressive
    • Combining techniques always reduces an artwork's meaning
  17. 17. Why might a professional illustrator use both traditional (physical) and digital techniques within their workflow?

    • Each approach offers different strengths — like the tactile quality of physical media and the flexibility of digital editing
    • Combining physical and digital work is never done professionally
    • Only one approach can ever be used, never both
    • Physical and digital techniques are always in direct competition, not combinable
  18. 18. Digital art's "non-destructive editing" (like adjustable layers and undo history) benefits artists mainly by:

    • Allowing exploration and revision without permanently altering or ruining earlier work
    • Making every edit permanent and unchangeable
    • Removing the need for any planning
    • Only being useful for professional animators
  19. 19. Why might collage be considered a valuable entry point into mixed media for beginner artists?

    • It uses accessible materials and encourages compositional thinking without requiring advanced technical skill first
    • Collage requires more advanced skill than any other technique
    • Beginners should avoid mixed media entirely
    • Collage has no connection to composition or planning
  20. 20. Why might an artist choose mixed media specifically to convey a complex theme (like memory or identity)?

    • Layering different materials and techniques can visually reflect complexity and layered meaning in the theme itself
    • Complex themes are always best expressed through a single, simple medium
    • Mixed media has no capacity to reflect thematic depth
    • Theme and material choice are always unrelated
  21. 21. Why might a digital illustrator organise their layers with clear names and groups (e.g. "background", "character", "effects")?

    • It makes a complex piece much easier to navigate, edit and revise efficiently
    • Layer organisation has no effect on the editing process
    • Only simple artworks ever need more than one layer
    • Naming layers always slows down the creative process with no benefit
