Producing a media arts work involves both creative and technical decisions working together — selecting camera angles, lighting and (where relevant) costume to convey meaning, choosing how to frame a subject, and using basic editing techniques to assemble the final piece. Media production and distribution are also shaped by regulation: government regulation sets legal requirements media producers must follow, while self-regulation involves industry or platform-specific rules and standards that go beyond the legal minimum. For this activity, plan and film a short sequence (even 30-60 seconds, using a phone camera) that conveys a simple idea or emotion (like tension, calm or excitement) purely through your choice of camera angle, framing and lighting — then briefly explain the choices you made and why.
Example
To convey tension using only visual choices (no dialogue), a filmmaker might use a low angle looking up at a subject to make them seem imposing, tight framing to create a sense of confinement, and harsh, high-contrast lighting — deliberate technical choices that communicate the feeling of tension without a single word being spoken.
