Find a short text in your target language that's a step up from single sentences — a news article, a short story, or a page from a graded reader written for learners. Read it through once for the general gist without stopping at every unfamiliar word, then read it a second time more slowly, looking up 5-8 words that keep getting in the way of understanding. Mark this complete once you've read a full short text twice and noted the key new vocabulary you found.
Example
A one-page graded reader story about someone's weekend might use several unfamiliar words — reading it once quickly to get the general story, then a second time to look up words like "weekend", "tired" or "relaxed" that seem to matter most for understanding, is more effective than stopping at the very first unfamiliar word.
