A linear equation in the form y = mx + c graphs as a straight line, where m is the gradient (how steep the line is — rise over run) and c is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis). A positive gradient slopes upward left to right; a negative gradient slopes downward. To graph a line, plot the y-intercept first, then use the gradient to find a second point.

Example

For y = 2x + 3: the y-intercept is 3, so start at (0, 3). The gradient is 2 (or 2/1), so from that point go up 2 and right 1 to find the next point, (1, 5), then draw a straight line through both.
